Adventure Foundation Pakistan (AFP) which has always taken a lead in mountain related sports and environment conservation activities in Pakistan, took the initiative and launched a project, “National Children Mountain Conservation Meet” in July 2002 in this connection to create awareness about significance of Mountain ecology among the new generation of Pakistan.
Under this project, more than a hundred children from all parts of Pakistan are taken to mountain areas of Pakistan every year in summer. During the Meet children undertake eco study projects in the target area along with other activities aiming at conservation of environment as well as enhancement of awareness in general public about the significance of mountains. At the end of their field visit, a Children Mountain Forum is organized where participating children share their observations and experiences with concerned government officials, and general public.
The children who attend this meet are given the title of “Eco Guard” which gives them confidence to play an active role in their day to day life to create awareness about the conservation of natural environment and its important role in our lives. So far five National Children Mountain Conservation Meets have been held and 580 children have participated in this project and gained the title of Eco Guard. Each year 100 to 120 children from different parts of country will be added in this list of environmentally conscious children and we hope after few years their will be a good number of young people who will be there to play an important role at national level.
